Convenient Care Clinics Wellness as consumer priority Medicalised Beauty in China US Med Spas The Wellness Market 2011
(wellbeing, medicine, tourism, pharma, wellness hotels)
November 2011 Spas, though still widely linked to beauty, now heavily intersect with the hospitality, tourism and medical industries. The development of spas highlights the emergence of two new market categories; medicalised wellness and medicalised beauty Alternative wellness therapies as massages have done - now move mainstream. Spas have become the go-to (or expert) for wellbeing and beauty solutions for a growing number of urban dwellers. Spas improve quality of life by making people feel better, eg, therapies which relieve tension and solve lifestyle problems. These areas are usually ignored or not taken seriously by the medical profession. Spas also deliver beauty solutions, for example, their treatments reduce visible signs of ageing, which is the leading concern of key beauty consumer categories worldwide. Current levels of demand illustrate the huge market potential for medicalised wellness both mainstream and alternative - treatments. Industry data suggests that health spas account for a third of tourist nights in Germany. In the UK, a different type of spa the city spa has grown spectacularly by creating wellness as a stand-alone category. Spas attract clients from a wide range (in terms of age, gender, geographies and cultures) of backgrounds. Innovative day spas outperform the market with their therapies and treatments customised for the busy urban lifestyle. Elsewhere, hotel spas report double digit growth because their larger sized facilities allow them to tap more fully into the wellbeing and wellness market. Spas' track record is quite impressive; they introduced and popularised the concept of the massage. In less than a decade the massage grew into a billion US$ market from nowhere. Spas are now increasing their sales by diversifying into the self-care market. They are introducing treatments and therapies which compliment or are alternatives to the established medical and pharmaceutical industries.
