STRONG DEMAND FOR HIGH PERFORMANCE SKIN PROTECTION DRIVEN BY USAGE OF COSMETIC PROCEDURES

Emerging trends in the global suncare market

Skin care is the top salon treatment, accounting for more than half of salon business in most countries in Europe and North America. Consumers identify the environment, that is, exposure to the sun, wind, and cold as one of the leading causes of skin damage and problem skin conditions. They are increasingly aware that failing to protect skin from the sun can lead to premature skin ageing. This awareness is not restricted to ageing baby boomers, many younger people are anxious to take steps to prevent the sun ageing their skin.

Consumers spend money to optimize sun exposure. They do this by buying products to use before, during and after exposure to the sun. Before exposure they exfoliate or moisturize skin. During exposure they apply sunscreens. After exposure they apply products to enhance or to prolong a tan.

Beauticians stress that the desire to prevent, reduce or remove the signs of skin ageing are the most important driver of skin care business in salons, due to the ageing baby boomer generation, a desire to look younger, and the rise in discretionary incomes.

Recent years have seen strong growth in anti-ageing skin care in salons that is driven by new products and new devices, among which:––
Dermal injectables / Collagen.
Chemical peels
The “pharmas” or pharma products
Lasers, and Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)
Dermabrasion / microdermabrasion

Strong sales of these products and devices have created a large pool of consumers with particular skin care needs. Many millions of consumers have undergone procedures using new products (peels, injections, collagen, etc.) and new devices (lasers for skin care, and hair removal). These consumers require high performance skin protection in the immediate aftermath of these treatments and/or permanently.
