The Ethnic Beautycare Market 2010
(Professional, Latino, Hispanic, African American, Black, Afro, People of Colour, Multicultural)
September 2010
The ethnic beauty care market is one of the largest
emerging personal care and
cosmetics markets. At global level, the majority (approx
80%) of the population is made up of people
of colour or, what is usually termed, “ethnic” In the US alone, ethnic and multi-ethnic people
will account for more than
half the population within a few decades while
many European countries like the UK and France have large
multi-cultural communities.
The ethnic beauty market segment is
outperforming many other more mature
beauty markets. It is growing strongly in
double-digits. Continued
high growth is guaranteed as these consumers are
youthful and
appearance-
conscious.
High spending on ethnic hair and skin care is also explained by dissatisfaction
with the
ethnic formulations which are currently on the market.
The majority of consumers feel under-served by existing products.
Black consumers can spend up to
seven times more on hair care in France, for example
than their white counterparts. African-American, African, Hispanic and Asian
beauty purchasers in South Africa, the US and UK complain that they want better
treatments for
dry hair and scalp, hair damage and loss, plus improved styling
products. As regards ethnic skincare, consumers are looking for effective
moisturizing products for
dry skin and safer
skin brightenerswhich deal with the tendency to hyper-pigment (ie, produce dark spots)
Ethnic consumers are also very interested in
organic or natural (non chemical) beauty formulations,
probably as a result of their bad experiences with aggressive
chemical products (hair relaxers, and
skin brighteners)
